Can I Get a Single Prototype from Oshcut? What I Learned About Reflective Metals, EDI, and Press Brakes

Last Tuesday, at 11:47 AM, I opened an email with the subject line: “Can I get a single prototype from Oshcut?”

The answer was yes. That part is easy. But the email turned into a conversation about reflective metal, EDI, and a press brake question that made me laugh. If you’ve ever asked yourself any of those things, this story is for you.

Who I am and why I keep a checklist

I’ve been handling manufacturing orders at Oshcut for six years. In that time, I’ve personally made (and documented) 23 significant mistakes. Total wasted budget: roughly $14,000. I keep that list public inside our team so nobody else repeats it.

My first mistake was in 2017. I quoted a laser-cutting job without asking for the exact alloy and thickness. The part looked fine in the screenshot. It came back with burned edges and a week of rework. It cost $950. Since that day, my checklist starts with one of the most boring questions in manufacturing: “What exactly is the material?”

The email that started it

The founder was building a small enclosure for a sensor. He needed one aluminum prototype to test fit and finish. He asked: “Can I get a single prototype from Oshcut?” He asked it like it was a privilege.

It’s not a privilege. It’s what we’re set up for. Oshcut is a custom shop for prototypes and low-volume production. We don’t have a minimum order quantity of 100. We do CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, and sheet metal bending. One part is a normal order.

Oshcut laser, reflective metals, and the question everyone misses

If you landed here by searching “Oshcut laser,” you already know we do laser cutting and engraving. But “laser cutting reflective metals” is a different beast. The founder asked: “Do you handle laser cutting reflective metals?”

I almost said “yes” and moved on. But my checklist kicked in. Reflective metals—brass, copper, some aluminum alloys—are not the same as steel. The laser source, focal position, pulse settings, assist gas—all of it changes based on the exact alloy and thickness. If you get it wrong, you get a part that looks like it was cut with a dull knife, and in the worst case, you can damage the laser optics.

Most buyers focus on the yes/no question: “Can you cut it?” The better question is: “Can you cut this exact alloy and thickness, and what do you need from me to set it up?” The founder sent a DXF and a material spec: 1.2mm brass. That changed everything. Once we knew the alloy, our Oshcut laser team set the correct pulse and gas. The cut came out clean.

EDI for injection molding—and the honest no

Two hours later, he messaged again: “Do you support EDI for injection molding?”

I don’t blame anyone for mixing that up. EDI, or Electronic Data Interchange, is how supplier systems receive purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices. For large manufacturers, it’s how procurement doesn’t die in a pile of PDFs.

But injection molding is not a service Oshcut offers. We’re not an injection molder. So the honest answer is no—we don’t support EDI for injection molding. If you need an injection molder with EDI integration, talk to an injection molding specialist. Ask which EDI document types they handle (like 850 for POs or 810 for invoices) before you send a part file.

(And if you meant EDM—electrical discharge machining—that’s a different process, also not one we offer. The lesson is the same: get the acronym right before you order.)

For a single prototype, EDI is overkill anyway. The better workflow is a STEP file, a short conversation, and a confirmed delivery date. That’s not because we’re small; it’s because speed and clarity matter more than automated order protocols when you’re making one part.

The press brake question

Then he asked: “Should I press brake when starting car?”

Honestly, I had to read that one twice. If you’re asking about your car, yes—most modern cars require the brake pedal to be pressed before the engine starts. If you’re asking about sheet metal, a press brake is the machine that bends metal. We use one for custom brackets, enclosures, and any part that isn’t flat.

The founder laughed and said he’d been reading about CNC shop processes and mixing up his search terms. That’s fine. It happens more than you’d think. The lesson for me was that the best answer to a confusing question is to ask for context—not to guess.

What I got wrong before I got it right

Here’s where the story turns. I gave a provisional quote for the brass part before asking for the material spec. I told myself it was fine because “reflective metal” is one category. It isn’t. The same laser that handles 1mm brass beautifully can struggle with 1.5mm copper. The machine doesn’t care if the parts look similar; it cares about the material properties.

I also nearly said “yes” to EDI without explaining our actual capabilities. That would have created a mess down the line. Better to lose a quick answer than to promise something we can’t deliver.

So, the middle part of this story is not a flawless timeline. It’s a series of small course corrections. The founder didn’t care that I asked follow-up questions. He cared that the part showed up on time and fit the first time.

The result and the checklist

The prototype shipped three days later. One brass enclosure, clean edges, good dimensions. The founder used it in a sensor demo, got positive feedback, and sent us a batch order for twenty pieces.

That’s the nice ending. But the real result is the checklist. Now, every quote request gets the same questions:

  • Material and alloy? Not just “aluminum” or “metal”—exact spec and thickness.
  • Quantity? One prototype or 1,000? Both are fine, but the process differs.
  • Process? Are we CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, or bending?
  • Integration needs? EDI for automatic orders? Or just a good file and a clear email?

This checklist has caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. The biggest one was a $3,200 order that would have been cut from 6061 aluminum instead of 7075 because the original quote didn’t specify the alloy. The buyer thought “aluminum” was enough. It wasn’t.

Why I’d rather say “this isn’t our strength”

Oshcut does a few things well: CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, and sheet metal bending. We don’t do injection molding. We don’t repair cars. If you ask us for those, we’ll tell you straight.

That might sound like a business risk. It’s actually the opposite. The vendor who said “this isn’t our strength—here’s who does it better” earned my trust for everything else. I’d rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), advertising claims need to be truthful and substantiated. I think the same idea should apply to a quote: if we say “yes, we can cut that,” we need to know exactly what “that” is. Otherwise, it’s not a quote—it’s a guess.

What I’d tell you if you asked today

If you’re looking for Oshcut and wondering whether you can order a single prototype: yes. Here’s what I’d tell you to include in your first message:

  1. What process? CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting, or sheet metal bending.
  2. What material? Exact alloy and thickness, if you know it. If not, tell us what the part needs to do.
  3. What finish? Raw, anodized, powder-coated, brushed—anything.
  4. What question? If it sounds like “should I press brake when starting car?” ask for context first. You’ll get a better answer.
