Oshcut is a custom manufacturing service, not one specific machine. They handle CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting/engraving, metal bending, and short-run fabrication. You upload a CAD file, get a quote, and receive parts. I've ordered one-off aluminum brackets, 50-piece acrylic lens covers, and a batch of engraved stainless steel nameplates from them. (We've ordered maybe 200 brackets through them—maybe 180, I'd have to check the system.)

What I mean is: don't come in with a preconceived idea of which process you need. Send the drawing and let the manufacturer's team tell you how they'd make it. If your part needs multiple operations—face milling, drilling, tapping—in one setup, a VMC is usually the right choice. A simpler CNC router or manual mill might handle one flat feature, but each additional operation doubles handling time.

From a cost perspective, a VMC's hourly rate is higher than a manual machine. But I'd rather pay $140/hour for a VMC to run 20 minutes than $85/hour for a manual machine to run three hours. The VMC finishes faster with fewer mistakes, and mistakes are the real budget killer.

When you're uploading a file to Oshcut, you don't need to specify CNC vs VMC. Their process engineers decide based on geometry and tolerance. But if you're comparing quotes from different shops, ask which machine class they're planning to use. It tells you whether they're thinking about the part holistically.

7. What's the most underrated factor in a prototype quote?

Design for manufacturability feedback. The biggest difference between a good and a mediocre quote is whether the manufacturer tells you that a tolerance is too tight or a hole is too close to an edge—before you pay.

In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: I specified a ±0.005 inch bore on a part that didn't need it. The part came back, the pin fit perfectly, and the bill was $700. When I sent the next revision to Oshcut, their engineer asked if that tolerance mattered. It didn't. The new quote was $410 for the same function.
