Why I Pay a Premium for Guaranteed Lead Times (And You Should Too)

That quality issue (late delivery) cost us a $22,000 redo of marketing materials, venue rescheduling fees, and goodwill compensation.

The 'savings' on that order? $1,200.

What You're Actually Buying With a Rush Fee

When I see teams balk at expedited shipping or guaranteed lead times, I ask them: what's the cost of being wrong?

In my experience, the total cost of a delayed order includes:

  • Direct financial losses: Missed event materials, production line stoppages, overtime for your own team.
  • Reputational damage: A missed deadline erodes trust with your customers faster than a subpar finish.
  • Internal chaos: The time spent tracking down a late order, escalating, and firefighting is time you don't get back.

To be fair, not every project needs guaranteed delivery. If you're ordering standard business cards with a two-week buffer, the cheapest option is fine. But for precision parts with tight deadlines? That's a different calculation.
